Welcome!!

My name is Ben Goldberg and I’m from Avon, CT. I’m currently a sophomore at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, MD, majoring in Mechanical Engineering. I am 19 years old and graduated from Avon High School in Avon, CT. In high school, I enjoyed playing on the soccer and golf team and was the Vice President and Treasurer of the schools highly competitive robotics team, the Überbots.

I really enjoy traveling, playing sports, listening to music and building things. My favorite sports are golf, tennis, soccer, biking, running, snowboarding, wake skating and more. My favorite place to visit is Hawaii, my favorite food is a toss up between hamburgers and sushi (depends on my mood). I am a very hard worker and am very easy-going. Please explore my website to learn more about my hobbies and interests!

Remote Controlled Airplanes

Since 5th grade, I have enjoyed building and flying remote controlled vehicles. My specialty is airplanes but I like just about every type of remote controlled vehicle. The hobby is quite expensive, but definitely worth it. Currently, I have 6 planes that I fly either  in my backyard or larger fields. I have 2 gas powered planes and the rest are electric powered including 1 electric powered helicopter. Numerous other planes that I have built were since either crashed or retired. The technology has advanced greatly since I started in the hobby, especially in the electric powered aircraft. The motors and batteries have decreased in weight and increased in power, allowing for much more agile aircraft. With the planes, I enjoy doing aerobatics and 3D maneuvers. I have also outfitted some of the planes with aerial video cameras that either transmit live video to the ground, or record the flight as seen from the cockpit. It’s a lot of fun to design planes and go flying with my buddies and sometimes we do combat with cheaper foam planes. My friends also have helicopters which they sometimes let me fly. You can learn more about the helicopters on Tommy’s website, www.tomcarlone.com.

Robotics

During my four years at Avon High School, I was a member of the Überbots. In 2006, 2007 and 2008, we won the Connecticut Regional along with other awards such as the control and spirit awards. These years, we also qualified to go to the Championship event in Atlanta Georgia where we finished as high as 4th place out of thousands of teams worldwide in 2008!! I was the robot operator with my good friend Tom Carlone. (see picture on left).

Each year, the FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) organization announces a game which we then have 6 weeks to build a robot. The robots can be as big as 5 feet tall and run off of a car battery.

During the 2009 seaon, I mentored team 2534, The Lakers of The Boys’ Latin School of Maryland. The team competed in the Pittsburgh and Chesapeake Regionals, finishing as the runners up in Pittsburgh and performing very well at Chesapeake also.
